Breakfast Of Champions Essay - 1052 Words

American Culture: Diminishing or Transitioning From birth the world and people that surround us influence our culture. Our family and the community we grow up in can influence us for the entirety of our lives if we don’t have a desire to change. As we grow older we become more self aware of reality and the values we should keep. Within, Breakfast of Champions, Kurt Vonnegut alludes to relieving himself of the negative American culture that he was taught to value from a young age. Some aspects within American culture I would like to rid myself of include the idolization, closed-mindedness, and racial intolerance- aspects that negatively impact American lives daily. Getting lost in a television program used to be done at the end of the day†¦show more content†¦It’s a shame that within our culture more self respect and kindness to others is not valued. America is currently going through a lot right now as a country. With so many opinionated people its necessary that we dive into conversations openly and respect the other person we are speaking with. Since opinions are often very different and personal, it is easy to feel attacked when someone doesn’t agree. The point of the conversation though is not to agree with one another but to share a viewpoint that is different and have thought provoking conversation. Just because we might not stand eye to eye on every little detail does not mean I cannot listen to what you have to say and value your opinion. I find it really frustrating to see people in the media, such as reporters and politicians, refusing to be professionals and set aside their differences to communicate in a calm manner to work together for the common good. Each person has a right to their own opinion and can still use their patience to respect another individual even if the opinions are polar opposites. It has be come standard practice to avoid hurting someone’s feelings or offending anyone. As a society, in this situation, we need to toughen up. We don’t have to be offended by every little thing and should learn how to make compromises. Being closed-minded is holding us back as a country. Nathaniel Hawthorne No Ordinary Author Essay - 3147 Words

The Romantic Period served as a breeding ground for some of Americas most extraordinary authors. Herman Melville, Walt Whitman, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Ralph Waldo Emerson are just some of the names that graced this Golden Era of American literature. Great as they were, these men still lacked a significant amount of originality. Relating their themes and structures results in little to no variation. One author, though born into the era of Romanticism dared to expand the possibilities nineteenth - century literature had to offer. Through works such as Young Goodman Brown, The Ministers Black Veil, and The Birthmark, Nathaniel Hawthorne incorporated Romanticism into his own style. This realization leads to the sealing of Young Goodman Browns d oubts in his community. It is thus the beginning of Goodman Browns initiation into the devils communion, an act experienced by New Englanders generations before him. Through his initial Puritan beliefs and upstanding reputation, Goodman Brown is simply an ordinary Puritan with ordinary beliefs. The appearance of the devil causes Goodman Browns faith in his beliefs to falter - an experience felt by many New Englanders. Ordinary Man finds his way into other Hawthorne stories as well. Reverend Hooper in The Ministers Black Veil, for example is just a small-town preacher, who, for more reasons than one segregates himself from the world by wearing an eternal black veil. The veil increases the superstition of the townspeople. An action beyond their comprehension, the ministers decision confuses them. They know not what to think. Some townspeople even see the veil as a curse. They worry that his residence over a wedding will portend nothing but evil (Minister 223) to the ceremony. Thus, black, an archetype for awful things, gives the people a negative feeling. They fear that it will jinx the new couple. This Is The Reason Everyone Loves UCSB

Why does everyone loves University of California, Santa Barbara? Because of the beach! It is an overall consensus that UCSBs location by the ocean is why all Guachos love their schools location so much, but theres still so much more to that. See what other unique qualities UCSBs location and culture has that made these 5 students enjoy their time on campus so much: Simplyjane2UCSB ‘20UCSB is a paradise, its crazy to think its an actual university. Youre right by the beach, which is especially awesome if you plan on going into something like marine biology. We even have our own marine animal lab/aquarium. This school is considered the Harvard of the party schools. UCSB is #3 in the UC system and #28 in the state so trust me when I say we know how to balance fun and academics, but school always comes first. Dont worry if you arent a partier, there are still niches and places to dorm if youre about the substance-free life. If you are environmentally friendly, youll love hearing that this school is one of the greenest campuses!shanelee UCSB ‘15 As a 4th year student at University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), I can vouch for its uniqueness compared to most of the other UCs. Since it is a school situated on the beach, the surrounding environment is breathtakingly beautiful and is a step different from the other schools. Although the beach itself on the campus isn’t the best, there are plenty of other beaches around it that are great for activities and events. In addition, the best aspect of this ‘beach school’ is the weather. I believe that this allows for its culture to be more carefree and fun loving. Students attending UCSB usually live either on campus provided housings or in the college town called Isla Vista, which is connected to the school. It is an area that provides true freedom, independence, and establishments to eat, drink, and meet up with people. For the location, as with many of the other UCs, UCSB is actually situated in the city of Goleta. Situated between the two cities allows for travel between the two cities very manageable and therefore gives more options. There is an amazing bus system that provides transport throughout both cities, of which UCSB students receive free fares. UCanStudyBuzzed UCSB ‘17 A bond much greater than simply attending the same university, that is the most attractive part of UCSB. Last year when an Isla Vista resident shot and killed many of our own it was sad, but together, as a community, Isla Vista and UCSB students alike came together. As a community we not only mourned the friends and family we lost, but celebrated their lives. As a group we rebuilt and grew stronger to show the world that we would not be hurt so easily. Beyond that single experience theres a general feeling of connection between you and others. Even if you dont know them they are there for you. K ChairilUCSB ‘18Students are largely pretty laid back and know how to have a good time here, but come midterms and dead/finals week, we can really crack down. Not to pigeonhole this school and its surrounding areas too much, but overall the culture here can range from hippie to snappy-businesslike. You get a good mix. Downtown SB (State Street), which is 15 minutes away by bus, reminds me of Old Town Pasadena and Hollywood mixed together, if that means anything to you. Oh, and were right on the beach. MirandaBlake2015 UCSB ‘19 I love that my school is by the beach because the beach is one of my favorite places on the planet. I love that its in California because its close to snow-capped mountains and sun-bathing beaches. Its also not to far from home, so I can be near my little sister and other family members. The culture at my school is very laid back and outdoorsy. Everywhere you look, you see people outside, maybe playing beach volleyball or riding their bike. Its also highly academic, rating among the top marine biology schools in California, among other things. Are you looking to apply to UCSB?
